Saturday was the Whisper 10k. The weather was a bit humid but with a nice 60 degree temp it was not too bad. I have not been running much at all. Just on the weekends for races to be honest. I did pretty well at Dark Strides so I figured I would do pretty good on a flat course on a cool day. The course is part road, part paved trail and part dirt trail. A really nice mix.
I was trying to stick to a 2 or 3 min run with a 1 min walk. When I got out of the woods for the last mile or so I finally looked at my watch. I realized that if I kept pace and tried to push a bit harder I would probably PR. My current PR was from 2014 and was 1:11:13. That was from a super fast course though. By this point I was losing steam fast and the breeze totally stopped so it was humid and getting quite warm. I just tried to keep putting one foot in front of the other. Just before mile 6 I guess my brain was not working because I thought I was not going to do it. I crossed the finishline and looked at my watch. 1:07:46. I'm sorry, WHAT? Yup and huge PR for me. Full disclosure, my watch said 6.11 not 6.2 but it would have still been a huge PR at 6.2 and since I was in and out of the woods maybe the GPS dropped out...who knows but I was thrilled! I even rang the PR bell!
I headed home and tried to relax since I knew I had a long day on Sunday!! The sun came out on my way home and so I just had a nice relaxing day.
Sunday was the big day. Ocean to Sound 50 mile relay. I had done this back in 2012 and had a great time so I was happy to do it again. The weather was perfect but getting up at 4am for a 5:15 meet up with my Black Girls Run teammates was no fun. We arrived at Jones Beach just around 6:15-6:30 for our 7am start. We took some pictures and Linda got ready to start us off.
Next up was Mindy. She was so cute and excited. Most of the pictures were taken by Cigale as she is the pro for sure!!
A quick hand off and I was off. I am sure the girls just took a couple of pics and then headed out to meet and cheer for me. About half of my leg was on a bike path so there was only 1 place they could see me.
Not too far into my run I was afraid I was off course. There was a split in the path and no one in front of behind me. I saw a guy come from one direction on a bike, I asked if he saw other people with bibs and he said yes. A few minutes later and I saw my teammates <3. I just kept with my 2 min run and 1 min walk. There was a young girl and her dad running too so I just wanted to keep up with them. I thought we were at mile 2 and then my watch beeped for mile 3. I was surprised it came up so quick but then I looked, it was only mile 2 LOL. Seeing the girls where I did I thought it was mile 2 but only mile 1. Once I got out of the path I saw them again as I was passing the little girl. (Ok I am a jerk I didn't want to "lose" to a 7-8year old LOL)
I did see them one more time before the finish really did sneak up on me. Stupid up hill to the finish though...why?? (I did finish in 1:10:12 which is my 2nd fastest 10k time ever) I was so happy to be done and hand off that bracelet to Cigale for her longest run ever!
We didnt get a before pic of Cigale since the bathroom line was long. But she was off. I tried so hard to take pics as good as hers of her running but I am afraid I failed. We got her twice. At the first spot a guy was running right in front of her in my way dang it!! She dropped off her jacket, grabbed a drink and kept flying by. she is also crazy fast of course LOL.
When we drove past her I am pretty sure we got a bit of some side eye from her LOL. We got up to stop again to cheer some more. Then a few more minutes and she came super fast to the hand off to Tiffany.
Tonja was off for her leg, I think it was the shortest leg but BOY was it a hilly one. I have run some races on the roads she had to run and it is relentless! We still got to stop for her twice which was nice. It was such a gorgeous day. She was kicking ass on those hills though, like it was flat! I would have been dying! She was even smiling <3
