Saturday was the Whisper 10k. The weather was a bit humid but with a nice 60 degree temp it was not too bad. I have not been running much at all. Just on the weekends for races to be honest. I did pretty well at Dark Strides so I figured I would do pretty good on a flat course on a cool day. The course is part road, part paved trail and part dirt trail. A really nice mix.
I was trying to stick to a 2 or 3 min run with a 1 min walk. When I got out of the woods for the last mile or so I finally looked at my watch. I realized that if I kept pace and tried to push a bit harder I would probably PR. My current PR was from 2014 and was 1:11:13. That was from a super fast course though. By this point I was losing steam fast and the breeze totally stopped so it was humid and getting quite warm. I just tried to keep putting one foot in front of the other. Just before mile 6 I guess my brain was not working because I thought I was not going to do it. I crossed the finishline and looked at my watch. 1:07:46. I'm sorry, WHAT? Yup and huge PR for me. Full disclosure, my watch said 6.11 not 6.2 but it would have still been a huge PR at 6.2 and since I was in and out of the woods maybe the GPS dropped out...who knows but I was thrilled! I even rang the PR bell!
Sunday was the big day. Ocean to Sound 50 mile relay. I had done this back in 2012 and had a great time so I was happy to do it again. The weather was perfect but getting up at 4am for a 5:15 meet up with my Black Girls Run teammates was no fun. We arrived at Jones Beach just around 6:15-6:30 for our 7am start. We took some pictures and Linda got ready to start us off.
We got to stop for Linda twice. Every 2ish miles became the norm for each leg. Linda is super fast so before we knew it she was coming out of the path at Cedar Creek Park. Unfortunately Linda had to leave us after her leg to do some family stuff but we kept her phone buzzing all day with pictures so hopefully she felt like she was with us a little <3
She can even drink and run at the same time!!!
We got to the exchange point and had to park a bit away so I ran in to get to the bathroom line. Luckily there were a few people on line who let me cut since we knew Mindy was close. I got out, got sunblock and bug spray on in time (That you ladies for making sure I did) to get a pic and have Mindy come flying into the park!
Best cheer squad ever!
After Sharon came in we Jennean was off for leg 8. On this leg there was a long stretch where we could not stop for her due to village rules (we did see many people break these rules but not us!) We got to stop at 1.5ish and then again around mile 5. I dont think she expected us at mile 5 :)
Not sure who BLANK Girls Run are but these are our official results
