Ragnar Leg 1

Ok so when we last left off we were getting up at TWO IN THE MORNING.  Everyone knows Gigi and mornings are not friends but I was so flipping excited!!!  Brad and Nick were already loading the truck when I got up so I got dressed and went down to help.  We were on the road by 3am to pick up Kristen and Rich and then head to the start line.  We tried to take pictures but with the darkness and the huge lights it was not easy.  We went to the security meeting and got our stuff.

After a bit of back and forth trying to take pictures Nick had to head to the start line.  They took the time to announce all the teams which I thought was pretty awesome!

Our first legs:

Nick - 5.7 miles
Brad - 4.4 miles
Angela - 2.4 miles
Rich - 4.0 miles
Gigi - 3.6 miles

Kristen - 2.7 miles

At 5:10 Nick took off like a shot!!  Holy shit he is fast!!!  We rushed out to Nicks half way point to wait for him.....when we were on the way were realized he was in first place - BY ALOT!

We then headed to the first exchange to wait (not very long for Nick to hand off to Brad). I am not familiar with Miami at all but I do know a very shady area and that is where Brad had his first leg so we stuck close to him as much as we could.  Last year one female runner was almost mugged!!!

The next hand off was to Angela for her first leg and it was still dark!!!  Brad kept a good lead with the exception of one girl.

Angela's leg was short so we headed fast to the next hand off as the sun started coming up.  Well it was getting lighter but there was 100% humidity in the form of suffocating fog.  It was HOT too!!  Angela of course arrived at her hand off almost right after we got there and handed off to Rich.

This was pretty much when the absolute panic set in.....these people were fucking fast and it was so hot and humid what the hell am I going to do?????  At this point we were ahead of schedule and everyone was so excited about that and I knew it was not going to be the case for much longer.....

We got to the park where my leg started and we took some pictures.  I think Angela and Kristen knew I was freaking out a bit and were trying to calm me down.  I can not say enough how awesome my teammates were.

Well then Rich came speeding into the park and I had to just suck it up and get ready to run.  He slapped the bracelet on me and I followed another runner out of the park.  We were both a bit confused as to where to go but we followed the paved path not the dirt path out.

My first leg was not in a very pretty area, it was just some houses and then strip malls.  I was hot and it was so humid I didn't even take my camera out to take pictures of some of the most beautiful spiderwebs I have ever seen.  I got stopped a few times for red lights that seemed to take FOREVER but I was kind of grateful because I was having a hard time breathing. Soon enough I was headed into the park to hand off to this smiling face.

I was sweating like crazy and not happy with my time but as always I felt good after I was done and my team cheered me on.  We headed out to get to the first major exchange to meet up with van #2 and see Kristen finish her leg super fast too!!  It was great to meet our other teammates.  I can say my one problem with the whole relay aspect is that we are more like 2 separate teams of 6.  I wish we could have hung out with them more.

One super lucky thing for us is that Angela and Brad live right by the next major exchange so we were able to head back to their house and eat/shower and nap.  I also got to hang out with their kids and meet Brad's mom  and grandparents who were just awesome.  They all headed out to lunch so we could actually nap for a little while.

Ok lets back up a little.

Last week was chock full of Ragnar preparation.  I had to get my outfits figured out for my 3 legs and then for the time in the van and my time in Key is better to over pack right???

Thursday I took off work because we had a flight down to Ft Lauderdale so Tom could drop me off at Angela and Brad's house before heading for the drive to Islemorada (sp?) to do some fishing while we were running.

Our flight was delayed so I went and got my nails done in the Ragnar colors to occupy myself.  Otherwise I would drive myself crazy.

The reason I chose which runner to be LMAO.....

It was finally time to go and once we got on to the Northern State Parkway I realized I forgot my of course I had to go back and now I got myself in panic mode that we would miss our flight.  Of course we didn't......but I hate being rushed.

Our flight then was delayed some more so I knew I would be missing the team dinner.  I felt so bad that we were going to be so late because I knew Angela was waiting up for me.  Once we finally landed we then had bit of an issue with the rental car and it took waaaaayyyyy too long to get our car.  I realized that I had not eaten since breakfast so we stopped at a supermarket to get some food in me.  When we got out of the rental car something smelled like it was burning.  That is when Tom realized that the car was so new they had not even taken the tire wrappers off....

Tom then dropped me off at around 11pm......there was some chatting and then we all tried to get some sleep because the 2am wake up time was going to be there very VERY soon......

I think I slept a little but before I knew was 2am.

To be continued......Leg #1..........

Leaving on a jet plane.......

Now I was not going to post before I left for Ragnar and just do a couple of posts when I got back to cover everything but I have to admit something........

 I am scared.

really...REALLY scared

I know this is silly.  I just can't help it.  I am on a team with some pretty fast and fit people and I am by far the slowest person.

Then you throw in the humidity and I panic.  We all know that humidity and I are not makes me slow and it makes me throw up.  I am usually a nervous person at the start of a race but this has been the past week.  When I first learned about this event I didn't just want to do it - I  WAS GOING TO DO IT!!  When Angela posted on the Team Tough Chik page that she just finished the 2013 run and was going to be putting together a team for 2014.... I . WAS . IN!!

Fast forward a year....I have gained 20 pounds due to some medial reasons but mostly a lot of bad eating habits.....I mean just look at the name of this blog.....I am 40 NOT 4 and yet I still eat like Buddy the Elf.

Putting on this weight has really taken a toll on my running times.  I went from the low 10 minute miles to the high 11 minute miles for short distances.  I was happy that in the last couple of races of 2013 my half marathon pace stayed close to 12 minute miles and my shorter races were close to 11 minute miles but here in the North East it is cold in November and December.....not 80 degrees and A MILLION percent humidity as it is in South Florida.

Now, I know that even though they are super fit and fast every member of my team is pretty much awesome and are not going to look at me like the asshole who is ruining it for everyone but I know *I* will be looking at myself with those eyes.

I have not run much since December between getting sick at he fact that I have seriously lost my running mojo.  With the exception of Rock n Roll Phoenix (Thanks to new friends) I have hated every single run I have taken in 2014.  WHAT THE FUCK!?!

I have been silently freaking out about this for the past week.  As I was getting the last of my running packing done last night it really started to hit me.

"What if I let everyone down?"

"What if my lack of speed and endurance cause us to be late?"

"What if everyone gets pissed at me?"

"What if no one wants me on another Ragnar team again?"

You get the picture, this went ON and ON and ON and ON......

Now, I do know that if me being slow is the worst of our issues this weekend it will be a win....the shit that Angela and Brad dealt with last year was so much worse....broken bones, hospital visits and dead batteries to name a few.....  You can read about them starting Here for part 1part 2part 3 & part 4

So you know what??  I just need to put on my big girl panties, do my best and have a good time.  This is not about ME and my insecurities it is about ALL 12 of us having the BEST.FLIPPING.TIME ever!!
