Nominated For a Liebster Blog Award!!!

What a way to start the day!!!  My friend Kim, from Barking Mad about Running nominated me for a Liebster Award.  Thank you!!!  I had not heard of this before today but I am so excited now that I know what it is!

What is a Liebster award?  Liebster is German for "dearest". It is given to bloggers with less than 200 followers as a way to spread the "new blogger" love!

Of course, with any award, there are guidelines! I must
  • answer 11 questions set forth by my nominator!
  • Write 11 random facts about myself
  • Write 11 questions of my own for
  • 11 new nominees!

Step 1 Answer Kim's questions:

1. What is your favorite Holiday movie?
Recent Movie is Elf (maybe because we eat the same things)
Except candy canes I HATE peppermint!

Childhood favorite is March of the Wooden Soldiers

2. What is your favorite Holiday song?  Little Drummer Boy by David Bowie and Bing Crosby
3. Who is your favorite Holiday character? Will Farrell as Elf for sure!!!

4. What is your favorite Holiday tradition?  For the past 20 or so years I have spent Christmas eve at my mother and I celebrate at my "other family's" house.  It used to be The Basile's and now that they moved to PA it is the Maffie's.
  5. What is your favorite ornament? Why?  I don't like Star Wars but I have a Darth Vader ornament from my friend Matthias.  A couple of years ago just after I finished decorating my tree it fell over and everything broke. It was all of my ornaments from my whole life.  The ones my mother gave me from my childhood and any I bought as an adult.  The second Matthias found out he collected any ornament he had and drove right out from Brooklyn to give me what he had and take me to get new ones.  It is a reminder of something I already knew but that he will always be there if I need him.
6. Is your Christmas tree live, or artificial?  I refuse to have a fake tree in my house!!!  I do have a little fake one at work but NEVER in my house!!!
7. Garland: yay or nay?  I do not use it but I di like it.
8. Star? or Angel?  We have a star
9. Tinsel: yay or nay? I LOVE IT but I can not use it with 3 cats in the house :)
10. Do you hang candy canes on your tree?  Yes but not peppermint ones !!!
11. What color are your Christmas tree lights?  ALL COLORS!!!!

Step 2 11 Random facts about me:

1. I started "running" on May 22, 2011 with a 5k.  And I have now run in 106 races.

2. I have been and will be again the crazy cat lady and I am not ashamed to admit it.
3. I don't even know how many tattoos I have and many of them are candy and cupcakes.
I really do run on candy
4. I have been at my current job since 1/28/2002.

5. Other than my husband I have had 2 soulmates in my life.

6. I have only run 1 half marathon so far and got hurt but my plan for 2013 is to run at least 13 of then and I am already registered for 5 regular ones and 3 virtual ones.

7. I am completely OBSESSED with Pee Wee Herman and even have a tattoo declaring my love for him.

He even comes on vacation with me.

Brain Dump....

I have been meaning to do a blog post for days now but life is crazy the week before my vacation so this is going to be a disjointed and jumpy post.  Imagine what it is like in my head right now!

I have run 493 miles in 2012 according to my daily mile....7 miles and I meet a goal I didn't even know I had.  17 miles and I hit one I did know I had To run 500 miles in a year.  17 miles and I hit "Blue" on Nike+.  My 2012 running goal was to run 52 races.....I am well over 70 so I am pleased!!

I know there are some missing but I apparently ran a lot more in 2012 than in 2011 LOL if this is my total mileage.

This weekend my friend Gabby came for a visit and she joined me for my last 5k of 2012.  The HoHoHo 5k in Bethpage.  It was a really nice day for a run!!!  I am not sure if it was because we were up late or because we ate pizza and ice cream for dinner but I had a tough run.  I felt like I was pushing really hard but my time was just my average.....33:41 according to my garmin but 34:04 official time because the race was PACKED this year!

Someone had a good time :)  The race photog got her doing this too for her official race photo!!  AWESOME!

Sunday we got tattoos.....Gabby's first!!!  She sat like a champ!  I as per usual whined and hated every second of it......yes I have many many tattoos but they freaking HURT!

Cotton Candy on my thigh....I really do run on candy!

I think this week is going to drag and yet not have enough hours in it at the same time....I am excited to go on vacation but I have so much to do before we leave.  Packing everything I *may* need, get my house clean, get everything set up for friends who are staying at our house when we are not there and also for our neighbor who is cat sitting and taking our mail in once Danielle and Josh go back to Virginia.

I was going to post my thoughts on the tragedy in Newton but it is not needed and nothing others have not already talked about.   I did register for a virtual half marathon to raise money for those families and I urge everyone to join me.  It is both a half or a 5k.  You can run/walk/bike/crawl and you can split up the half over a few days.  Please check it out and consider participating.

Is there such a thing as drinking too much tea?  It is cold now and I like tea.  I drink 3-6 cups of black tea with 1 raw sugar packet and a splash of skim milk while at work.  I know it is better than soda but is it too much?  Between the awesome Rodarte mug I got for myself at Starbucks to the Kurieg I bought for the office and finding Awake tea k-cups on sale for $13.00 16/pk.  I just keep drinking.....
I love lime green anything......

So did you have running goals for 2012?  Did you meet them?

12k on 12.12.12. and Christmas Vacation.

Well thanks to Run with Jess I decided to run 12k last night.

I love that this was christmas lights.

I was going back and forth in my head the entire drive home after acupuncture as to weather I would suck it up and run the 7.5 miles on my treadmill or get my butt outside.  Well I got home just after 6pm and it was dark and my husband was not home for me to tell where I was going.  I decided to dress for a run outside and hope he would be home by the time I left.  I put on my running tights with the neon green stripe and then bright shorts over them.  I then added my new white fleece running jacket with my reflector belt and blue gloves.  I looked RIDICULOUS!  Tom was not home but I decided to just run outside anyway.  I had my road id (which has the wrong phone number for him anyway since he got a new number but i didn't realize this until I got home) and my phone so I felt safe.  I also did what I tell everyone else to do (but never do myself) and only put in one earbud.  I also decided to try out a water bottle I won in a give away.  I have the worst luck with water bottles usually so I had been putting this off.

When I first headed out I planned to stay in my immediate neighborhood but that got boring quick so I took off for my long run route.  This was probably not the best idea because we live very close to a mall and the traffic is CRAZY.  I just wanted to check out the Chritmas lights.  That is one of my favorite things to do and I have been feeling a bit "off" and bah humbuggy since we did not decorate this year.

I love Tarder Sause so very much!!
I just didn't get to appreciate the lights as much as I would have liked, too much shit in the roads still from the storm that was FOREVER ago so I had to stay on the sidewalks when there actually were side walks but they were also in bad shape so I was always keeping an eye out for cars and my footing.

So the water bottle was in the center of my lower back tucked into my reflector belt.  At first I hated it as it made my jacket ride up but after a while it was fine, it did leak a bit but nothing too bad.  It flew out at one point and I have no idea why but other than that it stayed put.  It was also pretty easy to hold when I was running with it in my hand for awhile towards the end because I was thirsty.  I held off on drinking until mile 4 so I can try and not stop at water stops during 5ks.

I know it seems like I hated this run but I didn't I loved being outside running even with all the problems.  I was not cold nor was I too hot even though I was sweating like crazy.  I am so glad I decided to take the run outside but next time I need to remember to bring my knuckle lights!

When I got home Tom was home, chatty and wanting to make dinner but I was tired, sweaty and my feet were KILLING me so I was grumpy at him.  But he is just so good that he waited until I showered and relaxed for a bit then made me pancakes.

OH!  And the reason I have not decorated at home is a good one!  So even though I don't like not having a tree I will be waking up in Belize on Christmas morning so I will survive.  We will be staying at a yoga retreat so not only will I be staying in a thatched cabana on the beach but I will be doing yoga every morning over the water.

My ass will be in that hammock many MANY hours reading

Good Morning!

See I can't be too upset.  Plus I decorated my desk at work to tide me over until next year and really I am not going to pretend I will ever take these down.

So how did you celebrate 12.12.12?
Do you have any out of the ordinary plans for the holidays?

Sometime the heart and mind are not in sync.

I am slow.  I am not going to be fast.  Faster?  Maybe, but fast?  No.  That is OK and yes I am OK with it.  Sometimes I wish I was faster but I do what I do and I get it done.  I spend a lot of time encouraging others to get out there and run and they usually leave me in the dust.

I believe this completely!!!  I KNOW I am a runner because, well....because I run.  The thing is there are very few times I FEEL like I am a runner.  Does that make sense?  I can count the times in my life I felt like a runner on 1 hand.  Well today I actually feel like a runner.  For the first time since I started running I ran more than 20 miles in 1 week.

What makes  you feel like a runner?  Do you always feel like a runner?

Virtual 5k Series

Another virtual 5k run series I forgot to mention in the last post.  Rachel at Busy Mama Fitness is hosting a free virtual run series where you get an email each month with the details of each 5k.

Check it out and sign up here.

So many fun things planned......

You guys know I love virtual runs...I have actually done 3 so far this week and have one more to do.  I do have a couple more this year but next year is chock full of them

Plus I leave for Belize on the 24th!

Anyway besides the 5 actual half marathons that I am already registered for I now have the following awesome things on the schedule:

First is a Virtual Run Series put on by Laura AKA Mommy Runs Fast

You need to run either a 5k or a 5 mile run, by the 5th of every month. For time or for fun. It starts January, and goes through June 2013. It kicks off with the Resolution Run put on by Amanda at Run to the Finish.  I am also doing a Resolution Run for For the love of the kids.  For the love of the kids raises money to help children with cancer through The hole in the wall gang camp.

You sign up here for the run series.

There are options of any length/type of race real or virtual.  My goal is to do 13 half marathons.  I have 5 real ones on schedule already.
That leads into third.  Remember my post about how much I love bling?  I found Sandra's web site of virtual races for to raise money for Team in Training and you get awesome bling!!!  Fund 4 Bling.  Every month Sandra puts on races that are various distances and you can sign up for as many as you want.  She makes you awesome personalized bibs and if you send her pictures she will frame them with your name and time.
I just did this one last night.

I hope Kimberly doesn't mind I used her pic....
See!!  The bling is serious!!!
She is hosting a run series 2013 13 13.1's.  You have to do 10 of her races that you do donate to her team for and then use any 2 of your other races to make 12 then the 13th race is free and you get a super huge medal.  This series will for sure help with the first one!!!

Who is with me?  Let me know if you are joining in on any of them!!!

Safely back in my running shoes.

Ok as anyone within ear shot or who even glances at my Facebook pages knows I have been sick since the day before Thanksgiving and have not been able to run.  This included 2 DNS's this past weekend.  I know it was the best choice so I can get better but boy does that make me cross!  Who knew that I am to the point in my life as a runner than I need to run for my sanity and if I don't/can't it leads to a grumpy Gigi!  I decided yesterday that since the weather was perfect for running I was going to run when I got home.  Besides I had a virtual 10k that I was late in completing.

Now anyone who knows me in real like knows that I tend to be a bit naive with my personal safety sometimes.  You know things like finding a dog wandering the streets of a neighborhood that is a bit on the seedier side of town at night during a blackout after a storm and just randomly knocking on doors front and back trying to find the owner....or when I see a dog get hit by a car and run off instead of running after the dog I high speed chase the guy who kept driving and run him off the road with my car just to call him a piece of shit...or stopping my car on the service road of the Long Island Expressway during rush hour traffic and getting out of my car in a suit and heels to pic up a squirrel that is trapped between 2 get the gist.  I am smart I swear but sometimes emotions trump my brain.

So anyway by the time I got home it was dark and our streets are still full of Sandy debris and with all the stories I read on blogs and in the news of runners getting hit by cars or attacked and since my husband was not home yet for me to tell where I was going I actually decided to run at home.

Common Sense WINS!!! Finally!

Now I usually watch Big Bang Theory while on my treadmill but the amazing Jolene AKA Canuck Mom on the Run was talking about re watching Buffy recently on Hulu and I own the entire series on DVD I had to watch some......

Season 4 is my favorite season
As I was stretching this OF COURSE happened.  Why does this have to happen EVERY SINGLE TIME I get on the treadmill....sometimes just one cat but usually ALL THREE!  And my cats are big so everything about them is big.....

Thanks Horatio it didn't smell enough like shit down here and I love that scent when I am breathing heavy from running.
I took the run slow and I needed to!  I walked (4mph) for 5 min then ran slow (5mph) for 10 min and just kept repeating that for the 1:19:19 it took me to do 6.25 miles.  It was perfectly 2 episodes of Buffy too - BONUS.

I have my yoga clothes with me today but I am not sure if I am going to go to class or catch up on another virtual run that I am behind on.  It is a 4 miler and normally I would just go to class then run when I got home but I am still a bit sick so I don't want to go crazy.

Speaking of virtual runs.  You know I love these!!  I just registered yesterday for another one that is being hosted by my fellow Tough Chik, Kimmie (who BTW ran 17 miles yesterday YIKES) and it is for a cause that is near and dear to me...the fight against breast cancer.  You can find out how to register here.  You do not have to do all 13.1 miles at once if you are not ready but throughout the month of February.  I will be in full on training mode for my half marathons in March/April/May so it works perfect for me!!!
